What is a Shrink Tubing?
Shrink tubing is a plastic film that, like shrink wrap, melts over the desired product using heat and covers it. The shrink tubing film, often referred to as heat-shrink tubing, is a type of plastic tube that contracts due to heat and fits tightly around wires, cables, or other objects. Its advantages include insulation, mechanical protection, and prevention of moisture and contaminant ingress. These tubes are usually made from specific thermoplastic materials (such as polyolefin, PVC, or fluoropolymer) that gain shrink memory through processes like irradiation.
The main difference between shrink tubing and other shrink films is that shrink films are transparent layers typically used for packaging various products such as food or mineral water pallets to protect them, while shrink tubing is specifically used for wires and their insulation.
Features of Shrink Tubing Film
Materials and Shrink Ratios: Ratios such as 2:1, 3:1, and even up to 4:1 indicate how much the diameter of the tube reduces after heating, which is one of the most important design parameters.
Fit for Complex Shapes: After heating, the tube adheres well to the shape of the wire or connection and provides a uniform coating even on complex shapes.
Environmental and Physical Resistance: Some tubes are designed with additives to resist UV conditions and corrosive environments. Features such as mechanical, chemical, and electrical resistance are present in various polyolefins that usually conform to UL, CSA, and military standards.
Applications of Shrink Tubing
Electrical Uses: This film is used to prevent short circuits between wiring. These wires are also used to prevent moisture and dust ingress.
Automotive Industry: To protect automotive wiring from oil, vibration, and heat.
Medical Field: Some medical and dental tools are equipped with these protective coverings.
