What is HDPE?
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) film is made from polyethylene with a linear molecular structure and high crystallinity, having a density of approximately 0.94–0.97 g/cm³. This structure results in strong intermolecular bonds, producing a film with high tensile strength (~38 MPa) and remarkable resistance to impact and tearing.
In addition to its high mechanical strength, HDPE film has very low permeability to moisture, chemicals, and oils, making it a suitable choice for harsh environmental applications such as packaging chemical products, sealing, or protective coatings for construction materials, among others.
Furthermore, HDPE can withstand higher temperatures (up to ~135 °C) compared to other polyethylene types. By adding UV stabilizers, its resistance to sunlight and outdoor conditions is enhanced, enabling use in outdoor environments. Its recyclability with the code #2 also makes this film an economical and sustainable option for various industries.
Feature Typical Value / Range Industrial Application & Advantages
Density 0.917–0.968 g/cm³; avg. ≈0.951 g/cm³ (MatWeb) Light-weight strength; ideal for packaging, liners, and sheeting.
Melting Point ~127–133 °C Supports moderate heat applications; thermal stability in processing.
Tensile Strength (film MD/TD) Yield: ~29 – 30 MPa; Break: MD ~55 MPa, TD ~48 MPa High-load resistance; suitable for sacks, liners, heavy-duty wrap.
Elongation at Break (MD/TD) MD ~300–500 %; TD ~300–500 % Flexibility to absorb impact; ideal for film stretching & wrapping.
WVTR (Water Vapor Transmission Rate) ~5–9 g/m²·day @38 °C Excellent moisture barrier for food, chemical packaging.
Oxygen Permeability (OTR) Avg ~2,030 cc/m²·day Moderate oxygen barrier to extend shelf life of dry goods.
Environmental Stress Crack Resistance ~768 hours avg Performs well under pressure/stress conditions in packaging.
Dart Impact Strength ~212 g avg Resists puncture and tearing during handling and shipping.
Elmendorf Tear (MD/TD) MD ~24 g, TD ~332 g avg High tear resistance for tough industrial environments.
Coefficient of Friction Static ~0.175; Dynamic ~0.284 Smooth film delivery and processing, resistant to jamming.
