What is OPP Film?
OPP film, or Oriented Polypropylene, is a plastic film layer made from polypropylene. This film produced in common thicknesses ranging from 18 to 50 microns (µm); each model is suitable for specific packaging or labeling applications. OPP film is produced through a unidirectional (monaxial) stretching process, which enhances the film’s mechanical properties, providing high tear and tensile strength. It has a transparent and glossy appearance with high flexibility and acceptable physical resistance. It is used for packaging various food products, product labeling, stickers, and more.
Characteristics of OPP Film
High Flexibility: OPP film shows the best adaptability against deformation with a stretch ratio in TD of about 55% and in MD of about 115%, meaning it performs in fast packaging processes without tearing or cracking.
Transparent and Glossy Surface: The haze level is less than 2%, and the high gloss of this film makes it very clear and shiny; this clarity is suitable for packaging where displaying the product content is important.
High Physical Strength: With tensile strength in TD of about 9,200 psi (approximately 63 MPa) and in MD of about 8,220 psi (≈57 MPa), the film has desirable mechanical strength to prevent tearing during transportation and storage.
Moisture Resistance: The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of this film at a thickness of 30–60 µm is less than 10 g/m²·day, which is considered a good and acceptable indicator for protection against moisture.
| Property | Unit | Typical Value | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material | – | Oriented Polypropylene (OPP) | Biaxially oriented polypropylene film used for packaging and labeling. |
| Thickness | µm | 15 – 60 µm | Available in multiple gauges depending on application (snacks, labels, lamination). |
| Density | g/cm³ | ~0.91 | Low density contributes to lightweight films. |
| Tensile Strength (MD / TD) | MPa | MD: 120 – 180TD: 200 – 250 | High mechanical strength in both directions due to orientation. |
| Elongation at Break (MD/TD) | % | MD: 150 – 200TD: 60 – 80 | Good flexibility in machine direction, lower in transverse. |
| Haze (Transparency) | % | 1.5 – 3.0 | Provides excellent clarity and gloss. |
| Gloss (45° angle) | % | ≥ 85 | High surface gloss for attractive packaging appearance. |
| Coefficient of Friction (COF) | – | 0.3 – 0.6 | Can be modified with surface treatment (slip, anti-slip). |
| Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR) | g/m²/day | ~1.0 – 1.5 | Good moisture barrier compared to PE films. |
| Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) | cc/m²/day | ~1500 – 2000 | Moderate oxygen barrier, often improved with metallization or coating. |
| Surface Treatment | dynes/cm | 36 – 42 dynes | Corona or chemical treatment for printability and lamination. |
| Sealing Range | °C | Not heat-sealable (unless coated) | Requires heat-sealable coatings (e.g., acrylic, PVDC, or co-extruded layers). |
| Temperature Resistance | °C | −20 to +100 | Stable within typical packaging and storage conditions. |
| Recyclability | – | 100% recyclable PP resin | Eco-friendly, widely recyclable in PP stream. |
| Applications | – | Food packaging, snack wraps, biscuit packs, labels, lamination base film | Commonly used in consumer goods, printing, and flexible packaging. |
Applications of OPP Film in Various Industries
Packaging of Snacks and Food Products
OPP film is used for packaging chips, pastries, chocolates, and dried fruits. Features such as high transparency, sufficient moisture resistance, and economical price make it a popular choice for displaying products on shelves. This film allows easy visibility of the contents and provides an attractive appearance to the packaging.
Laminating Packaging Surface and Printing
Laminating is used for cards, printed boxes, or promotional materials. This film enhances scratch and dust resistance by creating a glossy or matte finish, elevating the visual appeal of the print.
Industrial Packaging and Covering Electronic Components
It is used for covering industrial products or electronic parts before shipping to protect against dust and surface damage. Features such as dimensional stability and resistance to scratches and moisture make it suitable for industrial packaging lines.
The Role and Application of OPP Film During COVID-19
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of OPP (Oriented Polypropylene) film in packaging significantly increased. Concerns about contamination and the spread of the virus led to higher consumption of single-use packaging compared to before; studies show that about 29% of consumers used more plastic packaging during the pandemic. The use of OPP for packaging pharmaceuticals and medical supplies with tamper-evident seals increased. Fully vacuum-sealed and tamper-proof packages, with clear printing of date and instructions, stabilized the safety level of the product, which was crucial in the pharmaceutical sector during the crisis.
