What is Biodegradable Shrink Wrap?
The world is waking up to the urgent need for sustainable solutions, and the packaging industry is no exception. For decades, traditional plastic shrink wrap has been a go-to for protecting and bundling products. While effective, its lasting environmental impact is a major concern.
Biodegradable shrink films are a subset of eco-friendly films. As the name suggests, these types of shrink wraps have biodegradability due to the presence of biopolymers such as PLA, PBAT, and starch or biodegradable additives in polyolefins.
Features of Biodegradable Shrink Wrap
Feature Unit / Type Typical Value / Description Notes
Material Composition – PLA (Polylactic Acid), PHA, or starch-based polymers Derived from renewable resources such as corn, sugarcane, or potatoes.
Thickness Range µm 15 – 40 µm Available in different gauges for food and non-food packaging.
Transparency & Gloss – High clarity, glossy finish Ensures good product visibility similar to conventional shrink wrap.
Shrinkage Ratio % Up to 70% (MD/TD) Comparable to standard PE shrink films.
Biodegradability – 100% under industrial composting conditions Breaks down into CO₂, water, and biomass without harmful residues.
Sealability °C 120 – 160 °C Compatible with most sealing machines; requires slightly lower temperature.
Barrier Properties – Good moisture barrier, moderate oxygen barrier Suitable for fresh produce, bakery, and retail packaging.
Tensile Strength MPa 40 – 70 MPa Lower than petroleum-based films but sufficient for light to medium loads.
Elongation at Break % 150 – 250% Provides flexibility and protection during wrapping.
Environmental Impact – Compostable & reduces plastic waste footprint Meets ASTM D6400 / EN 13432 standards.
Recyclability – Can be composted; not recyclable with traditional plastics Should be separated from PE/PET recycling streams.
Applications – Food packaging (bakery, produce, snacks), multipack wrapping, consumer goods Especially suited for eco-friendly brands.
What is the Difference Between Biodegradable and Recyclable Shrink Wrap?
Biodegradable: This type of shrink wrap is made from simple polymer-based materials that ultimately break down into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass by microorganisms under suitable conditions, leaving no product behind.
Recyclable: However, in recyclable shrink wrap, the product does not get destroyed or decompose; instead, after use, it remains suitable for recycling and can be reused through incineration or grinding.
High Performance: Despite its eco-friendly nature, this shrink wrap maintains the strength, clarity, and durability of its conventional counterparts. It provides a tight, secure seal, protecting products from dust, moisture, and damage during transport and storage.
Applications of Biodegradable Shrink Wrap
Industrial and Logistical Packaging
Versions such as DECOLINE with appropriate strength and clarity are recommended for packaging pallets or industrial goods.
Compatibility with Existing Equipment
All these films are designed for use in the same packaging machinery—without the need for technical changes.
Green Brand Strategy and Marketing
Using biodegradable films enhances the brand’s green image and aligns with consumer demand and global regulations.
Pharmaceuticals and Health Products
It’s an excellent way to secure medical supplies, supplements, and other health-related products, ensuring their integrity while using a responsible material.
